History and service have kept us intertwined – Tinubu celebrates Kwankwaso at 70
President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former Kano State Governor and presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on his 70th birthday, declaring that their political differences will not diminish his affection for the former Minister of Defence.
Tinubu conveyed his birthday wishes in a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The President described Kwankwaso as a longstanding political associate, recalling that their relationship dates back to 1992, when both men served in the National Assembly.
While Kwankwaso was a member of the House of Representatives, Tinubu served in the Senate. Their political relationship continued in 1999 when both emerged as governors of their respective states.
“As members of the Class of ’99 Governors, we both played pivotal roles in laying the foundation for the democracy the nation enjoys today,” Tinubu said.
The President also recalled their political alliance in 2013, when they came together with other political figures to establish the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Since then, history and service have kept us intertwined,” he added.
Tinubu acknowledged Kwankwaso’s contributions to Kano State and Nigeria, highlighting his record as a two-term governor, former Minister of Defence, former senator and presidential candidate.
He also described the former Kano governor as an influential figure in Nigerian politics.
Although the two politicians currently belong to different political parties and are pursuing separate political platforms ahead of the 2027 general election, Tinubu said their differences would not affect their personal relationship.
“That we are in different political parties and competing on different platforms in the January 2027 election will not remove my affection for Senator Kwankwaso,” the President said.
Tinubu wished Kwankwaso good health, personal fulfilment and many more years of contributing to Nigeria’s democratic development.
Kwankwaso, a prominent political figure from Kano State, turns 70 on October 21, 2026.
