Tinubu meets NELFUND Chairman Jim Ovia at Aso Rock
President Bola Tinubu has held a closed-door meeting with the Chairman of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Jim Ovia, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The meeting reportedly took place on Tuesday, although details of the discussions have not been made public.
Ovia, who is also the founder of Zenith Bank, heads the fund responsible for implementing the Federal Government’s student loan scheme, which is designed to improve access to tertiary education for eligible Nigerian students.
The meeting comes as the Federal Government continues efforts to implement the student loan programme and expand access to higher education.
NELFUND provides interest-free loans to eligible students attending public tertiary institutions, including universities, polytechnics and colleges of education. The scheme covers institutional fees and provides a monthly upkeep allowance to support students’ living expenses.
Although the loans do not attract interest, beneficiaries are required to repay them in accordance with the applicable terms and conditions.
Meanwhile, NELFUND has cautioned students against applying for loans they do not need, stressing that participation in the scheme is voluntary and intended to assist those who cannot afford the cost of their education.
The fund clarified that students who can independently pay their school fees and other educational expenses are not required to apply.
The clarification was contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday and signed by NELFUND’s Director of Strategic Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Presidency nor NELFUND had publicly disclosed the specific issues discussed during Tinubu’s meeting with Ovia.
