2027: ‘I can take a bullet for Tinubu’ — Kadana Governor, Uba Sani says
Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has reaffirmed his support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, declaring that he is prepared to defend the President’s political ambition despite public concerns over economic hardship.
Sani made the declaration during an interview on Trust TV’s Daily Politics programme on Tuesday, insisting that his support for Tinubu was based on conviction and their longstanding relationship.
“I have no apology supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and I will continue to support him till the last minute,” the governor said.
Asked whether he was prepared to take a political bullet for the President, Sani expressed confidence that time would vindicate his decision to support the administration.
“I can tell you today, tomorrow, and next tomorrow, that I will be vindicated,” he said.
The governor traced his relationship with Tinubu to 1994, when both men were involved in efforts to restore democratic governance in Nigeria.
He recalled Tinubu’s association with the National Democratic Coalition, popularly known as NADECO, and his support for pro-democracy activists during military rule, a period when some campaigners were forced into exile.
According to Sani, their shared experiences in the struggle for democracy and the devolution of power have influenced his assessment of Tinubu’s leadership.
Sani Lists Projects, Federal Appointments
The Kaduna governor also cited projects and federal initiatives he said had benefited the state under Tinubu’s administration.
Among them were the Federal University of Applied Sciences in Southern Kaduna, the Federal University of Education in Zaria, the proposed Federal University of Petroleum Resources in Rigachikun, and plans to convert Kaduna Polytechnic into a federal university of technology.
He also mentioned the reconstruction of the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari road and the appointment of Kaduna indigenes to senior positions in the Federal Government.
Sani maintained that these developments were benefits to the state rather than personal favours to him.
“The favour he has done is not to me, because he has not given me. It’s to the state,” he said.
‘Opposition Must Present an Alternative’
On whether northern voters would support Tinubu for another term despite economic hardship, Sani argued that opposition parties must present credible alternatives instead of merely urging Nigerians to reject the President.
“When you say don’t vote for Asiwaju, you must bring an alternative,” he said.
The governor acknowledged the economic difficulties facing Nigerians but argued that poverty in northern Nigeria predated Tinubu’s administration and had worsened over the years.
Using the analogy of a dilapidated building, he said the region’s longstanding problems had been neglected for so long that addressing them had become increasingly difficult.
“If we had addressed this problem even before Asiwaju ever thought of becoming president, we wouldn’t be where we are,” he said.
Sani also criticised northern political leaders for what he described as their failure to adequately address the region’s challenges, saying they needed to examine their records and accept responsibility.
“The northerners are their own problem. We shouldn’t run away. The only way to help, I think, is for us to sit down and look at ourselves in the mirror, and accept that we are the problem,” he said.
His comments come amid political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with economic hardship, insecurity and the performance of the Tinubu administration expected to feature prominently in political debates.
Sani Addresses Insecurity in Kaduna
On security concerns in Kaduna State, the governor acknowledged persistent challenges, particularly attacks in the Millennium City area.
He said he had discussed the situation with military and other security officials, adding that plans were being made to strengthen the security presence in the area.
However, he did not provide further details about the proposed security measures.
