Professor Yakubu Ochefu, a Professor of Economic History and Strategic Studies at Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi, has rejected his purported appointment to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) National Campaign Council, insisting that he is not a member of the party.

Ochefu said he was neither consulted before his name appeared on a list of campaign council members circulating on social media nor did he consent to the appointment.

The university don, who is also the National Chairman of the Association of Nigerian Universities Alumni (ANUA) and President-General of Ochetoha K’Idoma, explained that his leadership positions required him to remain politically non-partisan.

According to him, the organisations he leads comprise members with diverse political affiliations, making political neutrality necessary for him to discharge his responsibilities effectively.

In a statement he personally signed, Ochefu said his attention had been drawn to a list titled “Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) National Campaign Council,” which identified him as a member of the party’s National Campaign Caucus.

He stated, “I wish to inform the public that I am not a member of the NDC and have never been.

“I was not consulted before my name was included, nor did I give consent.”

The professor disclosed that he had written to the chairman of the council to formally decline the purported appointment, requesting that his name be removed and a revised list published.

Explaining his decision, Ochefu said his positions as ANUA national chairman and President-General of Ochetoha K’Idoma required him to maintain neutrality because the organisations represent people across different political parties.

“These offices require me to remain non-partisan, and I intend to honour that obligation,” he said.

He thanked those who contacted him for clarification and urged the public to disregard the circulating list insofar as it concerned him.

His clarification comes amid political activities and the formation of campaign structures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
