BREAKING: Beninese Govt detains dozen of soldiers behind coup plot

Published

on

Security agencies in Benin have arrested around a dozen soldiers linked to Sunday’s botched coup attempt, including the alleged masterminds of the operation, military and security officials told AFP.

According to one security source, at least 13 suspects have been taken into custody.

Another source said all but one of the detainees are serving members of the armed forces, while one is a retired soldier.

The arrests come hours after a group of soldiers appeared on national television early Sunday, declaring that they had toppled President Patrice Talon and dissolved all state institutions.

The officers, who called themselves the Military Committee for Refoundation, claimed they had seized control of the country.

But the presidency quickly dismissed the proclamation, confirming that President Talon was safe and that loyal forces were firmly restoring order across the capital.

Government officials described the attempted takeover as the work of “a small group” with minimal influence or reach.

“This is a small group of people who only control the television. The regular army is regaining control. The city and the country are completely secure,” the presidency said.

More details are expected as investigations continue.
