Exclusive: Like Adeleke and Fubara, Mutfwang poised to join APC as Tinubu endorses move

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, is reportedly in the final phase of his planned defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), multiple insiders familiar with the development have confirmed to Very Nigerian.

According to sources within the governor’s camp, the move, long speculated within Plateau’s political circles, is expected to be concluded before the end of January 2026, marking yet another high-profile defection amid the deepening crisis rocking the PDP at the national level.

The once-dominant opposition party has remained factionalised for months, with its internal wrangling now pushing some of its most influential figures into the embrace of the APC.

Reliable insiders told TheCable that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has already met privately with Governor Mutfwang, giving his blessing to the defection and assuring the Plateau leader of protection and accommodation within the ruling party.

However, the development has not gone down well with all stakeholders.

A section of the Plateau APC, particularly members who previously defected from the PDP, are said to be vehemently opposed to Mutfwang’s entry, warning that they may stage a counter-defection back to the PDP if he is welcomed into the party.

To ease tensions, APC National Chairman Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, himself a Plateau native, has held a series of reconciliation meetings with aggrieved blocs to smoothen the governor’s path into the party hierarchy.

The defection talks follow months of pressure on the Plateau governor.

In October 2025, during an event at the Government House banquet hall in Jos, Mutfwang admitted that “political figures” had been urging him to leave the PDP. At the time, he insisted that only God and the electorate could determine his political future:

“But I told them that only two people can authorise me to change my party, one is the God of heaven, and the other is you, the people. Have you asked me to go anywhere?”
The audience roared back: “No!”

His stance has now shifted significantly amid the widening implosion of the PDP.

The Plateau governor is also joining a growing list of state executives who have abandoned the troubled opposition party in recent months.

.On Tuesday, Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, formally dumped the PDP and was unveiled by the Accord Party.

In November, Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas was scheduled to join the APC, though the ceremony was postponed due to security concerns in the state.

The APC’s strength has surged further following the official defection of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, bringing the party’s control to 26 out of 36 states.

The only states still outside the APC column are: Abia, Adamawa, Anambra, Bauchi, Kano, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Taraba and Zamfara.

With the political climate shifting and the PDP losing some of its most strategic strongholds, Mutfwang’s pending move may further tilt Plateau politics and national dynamics ahead of the 2026 and 2027 election cycles.
