You walked into crisis with eyes open, now playing victim – PDP mocks Fubara for joining APC

The Peoples Democratic Party has expressed pity for Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, after his defection to the All Progressives Congress, describing the governor’s ordeal as a problem he brought upon himself.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, said the Rivers crisis reflects a distorted democratic environment where powerful actors wield federal might to suffocate political opponents and erode institutional authority.

Fubara had on Tuesday formally announced his exit from the PDP in Port Harcourt, alongside some appointees and supporters, barely 24 hours after meeting President Bola Tinubu in Abuja.

The governor claimed he took the decision because he and his loyalists did not receive the protection they expected from the PDP, adding that they had resolved to support the President.

But the PDP, in its reaction, warned the governor against falling into what it described as Stockholm Syndrome, a situation where a victim develops loyalty towards his oppressor.

Ememobong said those who followed the trajectory of events that led to Fubara’s defection know that the governor “willingly travelled the path” that brought him to this point, insisting he cannot accuse the party of abandonment after choosing that road.

The statement argued that even though the governor may be experiencing “temporary amnesia” caused by political trauma, he should acknowledge the role played by the PDP, civil society organisations and ordinary Nigerians who defended him throughout the crisis until “he capitulated.”

The party added that the entire episode exposes the deep dysfunction in Nigeria’s political order, where individuals tower above institutions and deploy federal machinery to bend opponents to their knees.

It warned that the country’s democracy is facing a grave threat, accusing the APC of working relentlessly to shrink the political space and build a one-party state.

The PDP insisted that all well-meaning Nigerians must reject what it described as the ruling party’s “ignoble trip toward electoral authoritarianism,” stressing that democracy is “terribly threatened” by actions of this nature.
