BREAKING: Hours after meeting Tinubu, Gov Fubara announces defection to APC
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), barely 24 hours after holding a closed-door meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The governor made the announcement on Monday during a stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House in Port Harcourt, where key political allies and senior government officials gathered to receive the news.
Fubara’s defection comes on the heels of heightened political tension in the state and a prolonged internal crisis within the PDP, especially the power tussle involving camps loyal to him and those aligned with former governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
Political observers say his meeting with President Tinubu on Sunday was a strategic precursor to Monday’s declaration and signals a major recalibration in Rivers’ political structure.
With his move to the APC, Nigeria’s ruling party, analysts predict fresh alignments among state lawmakers, commissioners, and political blocs in the coming days.
The defection marks one of the most significant political shifts in Rivers State in recent years and could reshape the balance of power across the South-South.
