Residents of Sheka Sabuwar Gandu, a densely populated community in the Kano metropolis, have been thrown into deep shock and mourning following the gruesome killing of a pregnant woman and her 18-month-old son by unknown assailants.

The horrifying incident reportedly came to light at about 8pm on Saturday when the woman’s husband returned home from work and found the house locked from the outside. Concerned, he was said to have forced the door open, only to discover the lifeless bodies of his wife and child inside the house.

According to residents, both victims were reportedly attacked and burnt, suggesting a brutal assault that has left the community traumatised and fearful.

Confirming the incident, a community leader, Ahmad Sani, expressed grief and frustration over what he described as the absence of effective security in the area. He revealed that despite the community’s efforts in constructing a police outpost through self-help, no security personnel have been deployed to man the facility.

“For a long time, the community built a police outpost, but the authorities have yet to deploy personnel to man the facility,” Sani said.

He appealed to the Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, to urgently deploy officers to the outpost, warning that continued neglect could expose residents to further attacks.

When contacted on Sunday, the spokesperson of the Kano State Police Command, CSP Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed the incident, stating that investigations had commenced.

“Yes, it’s true the incident happened, but we are investigating the issue,” Haruna said via WhatsApp.

The tragic killing has sparked renewed calls for improved security across Kano’s urban communities, as residents demand swift justice for the victims and concrete measures to prevent a recurrence of such violent crimes.
