Super Eagles begin AFCON campaign with 2-1 victory over Tanzania
The Super Eagles of Nigeria kicked off their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Tanzania on Tuesday.
Goals from Semi Ajayi and Ademola Lookman proved decisive as Nigeria secured all three points in their Group C opener, despite a resilient showing from the Taifa Stars.
Ajayi opened the scoring for the Super Eagles before Lookman doubled Nigeria’s advantage, putting the African giants in control of the contest. Tanzania, however, refused to fold and pulled one back, setting up a tense finish at the Fez Stadium in Fes.
Nigeria were forced to dig deep in the closing stages as Tanzania pressed for an equaliser, but the Super Eagles held firm to seal a winning start to the tournament.
The victory places Nigeria in a strong early position in Group C as they continue their quest for a fourth continental title.
