Turbulent Maresca era ends as Chelsea confirm Manager’s exit

Chelsea’s head coach, Enzo Maresca, has left the club following a dramatic breakdown in relations with the Stamford Bridge hierarchy, marking yet another turbulent chapter in the Todd Boehly–Clearlake ownership era.

Club insiders confirmed that emergency talks held on New Year’s Day failed to repair the rift between the Italian tactician and the Chelsea board, prompting his departure.

Maresca’s exit comes amid mounting pressure after a dismal run of form — just one win in seven Premier League games — which has left the Blues fifth on the table, 15 points adrift of leaders Arsenal.

Tension reached boiling point during Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth on December 30, when fans booed the team off the pitch at Stamford Bridge, voicing frustration over the club’s stuttering campaign.

Although the exact nature of his departure — whether sacking, resignation, or mutual consent — remains unclear, multiple reports suggest the Italian will not be in the dugout for this weekend’s trip to Manchester City.

Maresca, 46, had joined Chelsea just 18 months ago after guiding Leicester City to Premier League promotion in 2024, a feat that earned him widespread praise. His early months in London also brought silverware, including the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup, as well as a return to Champions League football.

However, a collapse in form this season, coupled with reports of dressing room unrest and disagreements over recruitment policy, ultimately led to his downfall.

Chelsea fans remain deeply divided over the decision. While some express disappointment over the abrupt end to what once looked like a promising project, others insist the team’s decline made change inevitable.

The club has yet to issue an official statement, but sources indicate that an interim manager will be appointed in the coming days as the search for a permanent replacement begins.

With Maresca’s exit, Chelsea’s managerial carousel spins once again, the club’s seventh managerial change in under four years, continuing the pattern of instability that has defined the post-Tuchel era.
