25 Die in Yobe Canoe accident, search for missing continues
No fewer than 25 persons have been confirmed dead following a tragic canoe accident in Nguru Local Government Area of Yobe State, while 13 others were rescued alive.
The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday and shared on its official Facebook page.
According to the agency, the accident occurred at about 7:48 p.m. on Saturday, January 3, 2026, when a canoe conveying 52 passengers capsized while travelling from Adiyani town in Guri Local Government Area of Jigawa State to Garbi town in Nguru LGA of Yobe State.
YOSEMA explained that the passengers were returning from Adiyani, where they had engaged in fishing, farming and other local economic activities, when the canoe overturned mid-journey.
The agency disclosed that 13 passengers were rescued alive, while 14 others remain missing as search and rescue operations continue.
Security agencies, emergency responders and local community volunteers have been deployed to the scene and are working round the clock to locate the missing passengers and recover bodies from the water.
YOSEMA assured that all necessary measures are being taken to provide support for survivors and affected families, while efforts are ongoing to conclude the rescue operation.
Meanwhile, Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has commiserated with the families of the victims and the people of Nguru and Guri Local Government Areas over the tragic incident.
The governor directed that immediate medical and logistical assistance be provided to those receiving treatment, stressing that referral services must be expedited to save lives.
Authorities have again urged residents who rely on water transportation to observe safety measures, particularly during night journeys and periods of heavy water movement, to prevent further tragedies.
