BREAKING: Four lawmakers backing Fubara makes u-turn as Rivers Assembly push ahead with impeachment
Political tensions in Rivers State have escalated as the House of Assembly insists on impeaching Governor Fubara.
The Rivers State House of Assembly has reaffirmed its resolve to continue with the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, despite mounting calls for political reconciliation.
Addressing journalists during a live press conference in Port Harcourt on Friday, the lawmakers accused the governor of blackmail, intimidation and constitutional violations, insisting that the legislature no longer had confidence in his leadership.
According to the Assembly members, Governor Fubara’s actions had allegedly undermined the provisions of the 1999 Constitution, leaving the parliament with no option but to invoke its constitutional powers to remove him from office.
They further alleged that both the governor and his deputy had resorted to threats and intimidation in a bid to weaken the Assembly and derail legislative processes.
“The trust required to resolve the current crisis in Rivers State has been completely eroded,” one of the lawmakers said, adding that impeachment had become “a constitutional necessity.”
The legislators, however, expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for intervening in the political crisis, describing his efforts as a show of concern for stability and democracy in the state.
They also formally called on the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, to immediately reconvene the Assembly to continue legislative business.
In a dramatic turn, four lawmakers who had earlier held separate press conferences advocating a political solution to the crisis recanted their positions, declaring full support for the impeachment process.
Shortly after the briefing, members of the Assembly were seen proceeding to the legislative chambers, signalling the commencement of a fresh parliamentary session amid heightened political tension.
