Impeachment proceedings stall as Rivers Assembly fails to reconvene
Plenary did not hold at the Rivers Assembly as scheduled despite last week’s adjournment date.
The development comes amid impeachment proceedings against the governor and his deputy.
The Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Martin Amaewhule, failed to reconvene for plenary on Thursday, one week after adjourning its previous sitting.
The Assembly had, during its first sitting of 2026 held last Thursday, initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, over allegations of gross misconduct.
The accusations reportedly include the demolition of the state assembly complex, expenditure of public funds without legislative approval, and other alleged constitutional breaches. Following the session, lawmakers adjourned proceedings to January 15, 2026.
However, as of midday on Thursday, there were no indications that plenary would hold. A visit by our correspondent to the Assembly’s temporary sitting venue — the conference hall of the legislative quarters along Aba Road, Port Harcourt — revealed no activity suggesting a reconvening of lawmakers.
No official explanation was issued for the failure to resume, and the Assembly has not announced a new date for sitting.
Efforts to obtain clarification from the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Eneme George, were unsuccessful. Calls and messages sent to his phone were neither answered nor returned as of the time of filing this report.
The silence surrounding the missed plenary has further fuelled uncertainty amid the escalating political tension in the state.
