BREAKING: Kano Governor Abba Yusuf meets Tinubu amid APC defection rumours
Sources say the delay is linked to APC leaders’ refusal to give Yusuf a written guarantee for the 2027 governorship ticket.
Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State is currently holding a closed-door meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House, Abuja.
Yusuf was sighted making his way to the President’s office at about 4:13 p.m. on Monday, dressed in his trademark white flowing attire and red Kwankwasiyya cap.
The meeting is the first publicly known engagement between the Kano governor and President Tinubu since the President returned from the 2026 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.
The visit is coming amid growing political speculation over Yusuf’s alleged plan to defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that has reportedly suffered repeated delays since the beginning of the month.
Sources familiar with the ongoing discussions disclosed that negotiations hit a snag over the APC leadership’s reluctance to offer Yusuf a written assurance guaranteeing him an automatic governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The defection talks have also drawn sharp reactions from Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Kano State governor and Yusuf’s political benefactor. Kwankwaso has openly criticised the possible move, describing it as a betrayal of trust.
He has further warned that Yusuf could face serious political repercussions in the 2027 elections should he eventually join the APC.
