Davido credits wife Chioma for encouragement after Grammy loss
The Afrobeats star was nominated in the Best African Music Performance category for With You featuring Omah Lay.
Nigerian Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has opened up about the words of encouragement his wife, Chioma, gave him after he missed out on a Grammy Award for the second time.
The singer was nominated in the Best African Music Performance category for his hit track With You, featuring Omah Lay. However, despite strong competition, he did not clinch the award. The category featured multiple Nigerian acts, including Burna Boy for Love and a joint entry by Ayra Starr and Wizkid for Gimme Dat, alongside entries from Eddy Kenzo and Mehran Matin. The award ultimately went to South African singer Tyla for her song Push 2 Start, earning her a second Grammy.
Sharing his feelings on Instagram on Monday night, Davido revealed that he felt dejected after the loss and even suggested to Chioma that they skip the post-ceremony after-party.
“I told her there was no need for us to go,” he wrote.
Chioma, however, encouraged him to remain positive and attend the event despite the disappointment. Quoting her words, Davido shared:
“Be humble in victory and gracious in defeat. We’re outside.”
Posting photos from the outing, Davido added:
“I said, ‘Baby listen, we lost again, let’s not go!’ She said, ‘Be humble in victory and gracious in defeat.’”
The post has since attracted widespread praise, with fans commending Chioma’s supportive message and Davido’s ability to maintain a positive attitude in the face of setback.
