2027: ‘I wont join my Uncle to support Tinubu’ – Davido says
Nigerian Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has ruled out supporting the All Progressives Congress in the 2027 presidential election, saying he has yet to identify a candidate he wants to back.
The singer disclosed this in an interview with News Central in August, explaining that although his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, has declared support for President Bola Tinubu, he is not obliged to follow the governor’s political choice.
Davido said his previous political alignments were influenced partly by family ties and party affiliations.
He recalled supporting former Vice President Atiku Abubakar when they were both associated with the Peoples Democratic Party. He also backed the APC in 2015, when the party emerged from a merger involving several opposition parties, noting that his late uncle, Isiaka Adeleke, popularly known as Serubawon, was part of the party.
“I shouldn’t have said we aren’t supporting anyone for president because my uncle declared his support for Tinubu immediately after he won the election. But as for me, I’m not compelled to support anyone. Personally, I haven’t seen anyone I want to support,” he said.
“In the past, I’ve supported Atiku when we were in the PDP. Also, in 2015, when the APC was formed through a merger, my late uncle Seerubawon was part of the party, so I supported the APC. But right now, I don’t have a presidential candidate. That might change, but it definitely won’t be the APC.”
Davido played an active role in the campaign that secured his uncle’s re-election as Osun State governor. Adeleke won a second term on the platform of the Accord Party.
During the campaign, the singer exchanged criticisms with members of the APC, who were political opponents of his uncle.
Davido accused former Osun State Governor Gboyega Oyetola of political desperation and alleged that he was plotting to cause unrest in the state.
He also accused James Faleke, a member of the House of Representatives, of pressuring the Independent National Electoral Commission to alter the results of his uncle’s election. The allegations were claims made by Davido and should not be treated as established facts without independent verification.
Although Davido said his position could change before the 2027 election, he made it clear that he would not support the APC’s presidential candidate.
