BREAKING: Court of Appeal upholds suspension of Sen. Natasha Akpoti, says Senate was right
The appellate court affirmed that the suspension fell within the legislative powers of the National Assembly.
The Court of Appeal, Abuja, has affirmed that the Senate acted within its powers when it suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central for alleged misconduct.
In a unanimous ruling delivered by a three-member panel of justices, the appellate court ruled that the Kogi lawmaker’s parliamentary privileges and constitutional rights were not violated by the suspension.
However, the court vacated the ₦5 million fine and contempt proceedings that were previously imposed on Akpoti-Uduaghan over a satirical apology she made to Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Delivering the lead judgment, Justice Abba Muhammed stated that the Senate President was within his rights to deny the senator the opportunity to speak during plenary on February 20, 2025, as she was not seated in the position officially allocated to her.
The court further clarified that the Senate Rules empower the Senate President to assign seats, and lawmakers are only allowed to speak from their designated seats during plenary sessions.
