Nigeria eases border restrictions with Benin, Niger in Kebbi
The borders, located in Dandi and Bagudo local government areas, were previously shut due to rising insecurity in the border communities.
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kebbi Area Command, has reopened the Kamba and Tsamiya border posts in Dandi and Bagudo Local Government Areas of Kebbi State, easing the movement of goods between Nigeria, the Republic of Benin and the Niger Republic.
The border posts had earlier been shut due to rising insecurity along the frontier corridors.
However, they were reopened following a series of diplomatic engagements and agreements between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin.
Speaking during the reopening ceremony on Monday, the Customs Area Comptroller in Kebbi State, Mahmud Matawalle Ibrahim, said the decision was taken with the approval of the President, to allow the free movement of legitimate goods across the borders.
According to him, the reopening permits goods to move from the Tsamiya border post to the Niger Republic through the Kamba border, restoring a key regional trade route.
Ibrahim disclosed that several trucks previously stranded in the Republic of Benin had now been officially cleared at Tsamiya to proceed to the Tunga Jado border in Niger via Kamba.
He noted that the development would significantly revive trading activities, strengthen economic ties, and enhance security cooperation among the neighbouring countries.
The customs boss assured that all parties involved remain committed to upholding the terms of the agreement and ensuring the smooth and secure operation of cross-border trade in the affected areas.
