Student killed as police, protesters clash in Senegal Varsity
A student has died following clashes between police and students protesting delays in stipend payments at a university in Senegal, the government said on Tuesday.
The incident happened on Monday at the Sheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, the country’s capital, after students took to the streets over unpaid allowances.
In a statement, the government confirmed that the victim, Abdoulaye Ba, was a second-year medical student. The circumstances surrounding his death were linked to the unrest that followed the confrontation between security forces and protesting students.
Protests have sporadically broken out at several Senegalese universities over the past several months, with student demanding they be paid their stipends.
