World Cup: Senegal left on brink as Haaland leads Norway to last 32
Erling Haaland scored his second World Cup brace in as many games as Norway defeated Senegal 3–2 on Monday to secure qualification for the last 32 with a game to spare.
Norway took control of the contest in New Jersey, with substitute Marcus Holmgren Pedersen opening the scoring late in the first half before Haaland doubled the advantage shortly after the restart.
Senegal responded through Ismaila Sarr, but defensive errors proved costly as Haaland struck again to restore Norway’s cushion, despite Sarr adding a late second to set up a tense finish.
Manchester City striker Haaland now has four goals in two matches at the tournament, continuing a blistering run of form that has made Norway one of the standout sides at the competition.
Earlier in the day, Lionel Messi scored a brace to move to a record 18 World Cup goals, while Kylian Mbappé also netted twice in France’s 3–0 win over Iraq, setting up a compelling group battle.
Norway, who have now lost just once in their last 18 matches, will face France in Boston on Friday in a high-stakes clash for top spot in the group.
Senegal, meanwhile, must beat Iraq in their final group match to stand any chance of progressing, with their campaign now hanging by a thread.
