The Federal Government has named Dr. John Nwabueze as the Tax Ombudsman, in line with the provisions of the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Act, 2025.

The appointment, announced by Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga on Tuesday, reflects President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ongoing commitment to implementing broad and lasting reforms in Nigeria’s tax and revenue system.

Dr. Nwabueze, who hails from Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State, brings years of expertise from both public and private sectors.

He previously served as Managing Partner of a top tax advisory firm, Technical Adviser to the Joint Senate Committees on Finance and the Federal Capital Territory, and as Technical Adviser to the Chief Economic Adviser under former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

He holds a Doctor of Business Administration in Finance from Walden University, Minneapolis; an MSc in Accounting from Strayer University, Washington D.C.; and dual BSc degrees in Accounting and Mathematics from the University of Jos.

President Tinubu congratulated Nwabueze, expressing confidence in his integrity, professionalism, and capacity to effectively discharge his duties.

According to the statement, the Office of the Tax Ombudsman was created to promote transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s tax system, build public trust, and offer a fair and structured mechanism for resolving disputes between taxpayers and revenue authorities.

The office will handle complaints relating to taxes, levies, regulatory fees, customs duties, and excise matters, ensuring that such disputes are resolved impartially and efficiently while protecting taxpayers from arbitrary actions by tax officials.
