Shettima heads to Brazil for UN Climate Summit on Tinubu’s behalf
Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has departed Abuja for Brazil to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30).
The global summit, hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in partnership with international climate organizations, is scheduled to take place from November 6 to 7 in Belém, Pará State, the heart of the Brazilian Amazon and a key region in the global fight against climate change.
Shettima is expected to join other world leaders, development partners, and business executives at the event themed “Climate Action and Implementation,” which focuses on adaptation, forests, biodiversity, and climate justice.
On the first day of the conference, the Vice President will attend the leaders’ plenary session where he will deliver Nigeria’s climate action address.
He will also participate in the launch of the Tropical Forest Forever Fund and join a roundtable discussion on Climate and Nature chaired by President Lula, followed by an Amazonian Cocktail for Heads of Delegation.
On the second day, Shettima will take part in two additional roundtables led by President Lula on energy transition and the review of the Paris Agreement, focusing on Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and climate financing.
Beyond the summit, the Vice President is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s participation in the global carbon market, an initiative projected to unlock between $2.5 billion and $3 billion annually in carbon finance over the next decade.
After COP30, Shettima will proceed to Brasilia for a courtesy visit to his Brazilian counterpart, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, who had earlier visited Nigeria in June.
During Alckmin’s visit, both nations signed several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering defence, agricultural technology, energy cooperation, and cultural exchange.
While in Brasilia, Shettima will engage Brazilian officials to further strengthen Nigeria’s South-South diplomatic relations.
He is expected to return to Nigeria at the conclusion of his engagements in Brazil.
