Ramadan: Senate moves to adjust election timetable
The House of Representatives is also expected to hold a similar session to deliberate on key national issues.
The Nigerian Senate has convened an extraordinary sitting to review the Electoral Act (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill in light of the recently released 2027 general election timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to a statement issued by Prof. Jake Dan-Azumi, Chief of Staff to the Speaker of the House, the review was triggered by concerns that the scheduled presidential and National Assembly elections overlap with Ramadan, a development that could affect voter turnout.
Among the proposed adjustments, the Bill seeks to reduce the statutory notice period for elections from 360 days to 300 days.
This change is aimed at providing greater flexibility in setting election dates and ensuring they align with national considerations, including religious observances.
