Suspected thugs storm APC secretariat in Ondo, injure chairman, others
Less than 20 hours to the nationwide ward congresses of the All Progressives Congress (APC), suspected political thugs on Tuesday reportedly stormed the Ondo State Secretariat of the party, assaulting the State Chairman, Ade Adetimehin, and other party stalwarts.
Party chieftains and officials were said to have gathered at the secretariat in Akure for a routine stakeholders’ meeting ahead of Wednesday’s congress when the violence erupted. The incident caused panic, forcing members to flee for safety and abruptly ending the meeting.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the armed thugs, allegedly wielding sticks, machetes and other crude weapons, invaded the premises without warning, issuing threats and disrupting proceedings. Several leaders and party members reportedly sustained varying degrees of injuries during the attack and were rushed to hospital for medical attention.
Confirming the development, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Abayomi Jimoh, said the command received a distress call and immediately deployed tactical teams to restore order and provide security at the secretariat and surrounding areas.
He added that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
