Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, son of Mudashiru Obasa, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has been confirmed as the substantive chairman of Agege Local Government.

His appointment comes after the resignation of Tunde Azeez, the former chairman, who had been on medical leave since shortly after his inauguration on July 27, 2025.

Azeez officially resigned on Wednesday due to ongoing health issues. His resignation letter was read during plenary at the Agege council chamber by Adeshina Haruna, the leader of the house.

Lawmakers unanimously voted to confirm Obasa, who had been acting in the role, as substantive chairman.

He had previously indicated interest in contesting the council chairmanship ahead of the 2025 LG elections but was dropped following opposition to his candidacy.

Council members said Obasa had effectively overseen mobilisation and grassroots engagement since Azeez went on medical leave.

They said the decision to confirm him was aimed at preventing a leadership vacuum and sustaining administrative continuity in the council.

The legislators commended Azeez for his service in office and wished him a full recovery.

In his acceptance remarks, the new chairman pledged to consolidate ongoing initiatives and strengthen collaboration with community stakeholders to improve service delivery in Agege.

During the plenary, lawmakers also reviewed committee structures and oversight mechanisms, stressing the need for improved transparency and accountability in the execution of local government projects.
