Chaos in House as Lawmakers clash over Lagos Trade Fair Land allocation
The House of Representatives descended into a rowdy session on Tuesday over a motion concerning the alleged illegal and criminal allocation of Federal Government lands at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex.
The motion, sponsored by Representative Ademorin Kuye, sought the establishment of an ad hoc committee to investigate the reported irregularities in land allocations at the complex.
However, the proposal sparked heated debate among lawmakers, with several members arguing that the matter should fall under the jurisdiction of the House Committee on Commerce rather than a special ad hoc committee.
The disagreement led to tense exchanges on the floor, temporarily disrupting proceedings before the House leadership intervened to restore order. Further deliberations on the motion are expected to continue in subsequent sittings.
Following a vote on the motion, the Deputy Speaker, who was presiding, ruled in favor of the initial proposal.
Several members continued to express their anger and consistently voted against subsequent motions, but they were repeatedly overruled by the Deputy Speaker.
Lawmakers have insisted that no other motions be taken, repeatedly shouting down any member who attempts to present one.
Efforts to calm the members have so far proven unsuccessful. The Deputy Speaker has now called for an executive session.
