Nationwide blackout looms as electricity workers threaten strike

Nigeria may be on the brink of another nationwide blackout as the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) signals an imminent strike following the expiration of its 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government.

The union accused power sector employers, including electricity distribution and generation companies, of violating labour agreements, failing to remit statutory deductions, and subjecting workers to poor conditions of service.

Among the grievances listed are alleged breaches of wage agreements, non-remittance of Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) taxes, and outstanding pension contributions.

The union said repeated appeals and negotiations failed to yield meaningful action, prompting its decision to begin nationwide mobilisation.

NUEE leaders warned that industrial action could commence “at any moment” if urgent steps are not taken to address their demands.

A strike by electricity workers could cripple power generation and distribution across the country, disrupting businesses, healthcare services, telecommunications, and other critical sectors that rely heavily on stable electricity supply.

The development raises fresh concerns over the fragility of Nigeria’s power sector, which has struggled for years with operational inefficiencies, liquidity challenges, and labour disputes.

Stakeholders are now urging swift intervention by the Federal Government to prevent another round of nationwide outages that could worsen economic pressures on households and businesses.
