‘Give me two weeks to resolve it’ – Power Minister Adelabu beg Nigerians over poor electricity supply
Minister of Power, Bayo Adelabu, has apologised to Nigerians over the poor electricity supply and frequent outages experienced across the country in recent months.
Adelabu made the apology during a press conference held in Abuja on Tuesday, admitting that the situation has caused hardship for citizens.
“I want to apologise, coming from me as a minister of power, for this temporary issue that is leading to hardship being experienced,” he said.
He explained that the apology was necessary, especially due to the dry season, which has brought intense heat and affected businesses, schools, and industries nationwide.
“It is not our wish to find ourselves in this situation, but it is some factors that are actually beyond our control,” Adelabu added.
The minister, however, assured Nigerians that the government remains committed to improving electricity supply across the country.
“We are working on it 24-7 to make sure that we go back to the trajectory of 2025, whereby you praised us and commended us for a good job well done,” he said.
“And we can imagine, if we could provide such service in 2025, this is 2026, when we will be willing to even do more and better, as we are close to the election year.”
Despite the current challenges, Adelabu expressed confidence that the situation would soon improve.
“But I can assure you that in the next few weeks, all this will be over, power generation will improve, distribution will improve, and that 6,000 MHz will be achieved before the end of this year, and Nigerians will be better for it,” he said.
He had earlier disclosed on March 20 that the federal government had taken steps to tackle ongoing gas supply issues affecting power generation.
The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), on March 5, also attributed the drop in electricity supply to continued gas shortages impacting several thermal power plants.
