Hundreds of passengers were left stranded on Monday morning after a Kaduna-bound train collided with another train along the rail corridor, forcing an immediate suspension of operations.

The incident, which occurred during the peak early-morning commute, has raised concerns about safety protocols and the reliability of the Digital Signaling System on Nigeria’s busiest rail route.

Passengers aboard the train reported a sudden, violent jolt as the train came into contact with a stationary or oncoming train. “We were moving at a steady pace when there was a loud bang and the train suddenly braked,” one passenger said via social media. Another passenger, Sada Malumfashi, added, “People got flung across the train. Many were bleeding and seriously injured.”

Preliminary reports indicate significant damage to the train engines, though there are no confirmed fatalities. Emergency response teams and security personnel have been deployed to evacuate passengers and secure the site.

The incident underscores potential lapses either in communication between train operators and the control centre or a malfunction in automated signaling systems, prompting calls for urgent investigations to prevent a recurrence.
