23 Killed, 108 injured in Maiduguri bomb blasts – Police

The Borno State Police Command has confirmed that 23 persons were killed while 108 others sustained injuries following multiple bomb explosions in Maiduguri.

The blasts, which occurred at about 7:24 p.m. on Monday, targeted three locations — a major market, the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office flyover.

In a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Nahum Daso, preliminary investigations indicated that the attacks were carried out by suspected suicide bombers.

The police described the incident as tragic, confirming that 23 people lost their lives while 108 others suffered varying degrees of injuries.

Following the explosions, a combined team of police tactical units, the military and other joint security operatives were deployed to the affected areas.

Authorities said the scenes were immediately secured and cordoned off, while the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit conducted thorough sweep operations to ensure no additional threats were present.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Naziru Abdulmajid, visited the locations for an on-the-spot assessment and to evaluate ongoing response efforts.

He also commiserated with victims and their families, assuring residents of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property.

Emergency responders, including the National Emergency Management Agency and the State Emergency Management Agency, evacuated the injured victims to various medical facilities for treatment.

The police said normalcy has since been restored in the affected areas, while investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the attacks.

Security presence has also been intensified across Maiduguri and its environs to prevent further incidents.

The command urged residents to remain calm and vigilant, and to report any suspicious activity to security agencies.

Meanwhile, Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, condemned the attacks, describing them as barbaric and inhumane.

The governor called for calm among residents, stressing that attacks targeting civilians are unacceptable, particularly at a time when Muslim faithful are observing acts of worship.
