Abuja: Wike stops car sales on parks, green areas
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has ordered the immediate stoppage of the use of parks, gardens and other designated green areas in Abuja as car dealership lots.
Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, explaining that the directive is aimed at protecting the capital’s green spaces and reducing the risk of flooding.
The minister raised concerns over the increasing conversion of recreational areas into commercial spaces, particularly parts of the Millennium Park.
The minister directed that all unauthorised use of such areas be closely monitored to ensure compliance with the directive.
The administration said it has set up a task force to enforce the directive and ensure that green areas are not converted for unauthorised commercial activities.
Wike also directed an investigation into some civil servants accused of granting illegal approvals for the use of green areas as car dealership lots.
“The affected civil servants, particularly the Directors of Parks and Recreation, Environmental Protection, Traffic Management and Urban Affairs have been summoned by the FCT Head of Service, Nancy Sabanti Nathan,” the statement reads.
The FCTA said the investigation would establish how the affected areas were approved for use as car dealership lots and determine responsibility for the alleged violations.
