Adamawa man admits impregnating daughter, says lust drove him to commit incest

A man identified as Jediel Sylvester has admitted before a court in Adamawa State to repeatedly having sexual intercourse with his biological daughter, resulting in her pregnancy.

Sylvester, a resident of Ganye Local Government Area in southern Adamawa State, pleaded guilty before the Upper Area Court No. 1 in Ganye, presided over by Kabiru Musa, saying lust drove him to commit the offence.

Following his guilty plea, the court ordered that he be remanded in a correctional facility pending further proceedings.

The defendant was arraigned after a direct criminal complaint was filed against him by his daughter and her uncle, Mohammed Audi, through their counsel, Abdulrahman Njidda, pursuant to Section 111 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Adamawa State, 2018.

Addressing the court, Audi, who said the victim is the daughter of his sister, explained that the accused took the girl to a medical practitioner after she complained that she had missed her menstrual period.

According to him, medical examination confirmed that the girl was three months pregnant. He alleged that Sylvester thereafter pressured his daughter to accuse another person of being responsible for the pregnancy, but she refused, insisting that no one else had ever had sexual relations with her.

Audi further alleged that the defendant later suggested terminating the pregnancy, but the victim rejected the proposal, describing it as dangerous and inappropriate.

The victim, who is the second complainant in the case, told the court that her father repeatedly assaulted, threatened and intimidated her into having sexual intercourse with him.

Sylvester is facing charges bordering on incest, criminal intimidation and assault, contrary to Sections 367, 382 and 242 of the Penal Code Law of Adamawa State.
