ADC ratifies David Mark-Led NWC, expels Nafiu Bala, adopts new constitution

The 8th National Convention of the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) has ratified the David Mark-led National Working Committee (NWC), adopted a revised constitution, approved its updated policy and manifesto, and endorsed outcomes of congresses conducted across the country.

The convention, held on Tuesday in Abuja, also approved disciplinary actions against some members, including the expulsion of Nafiu Bala and others over alleged anti-party activities.

Those expelled were listed as Hon. Leke Abejide, Mr. Nafiu Bala, Odion Kennedy, Mrs. Stella Chukwuma, Johnny Derek, and Elias.

Reading the report of the disciplinary committee, party officials stated that the affected members had been given opportunities to reverse their actions but failed to do so.

“Consequently, the Convention is respectfully invited to expel the above-named persons for anti-party activities,” the report stated.

The committee relied on Article 92 of the party’s constitution, which empowers the National Convention to suspend or expel members and exercise disciplinary control over party organs and officers.

Earlier during the convention, former Speaker of the House of Representatives and senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, called for unity among party members and urged judicial officers not to allow themselves to be used against democracy.

According to him, the mission of the party should be centred on rescuing Nigeria through collective sacrifice and a shared national vision.

“It is not about an individual. It is about our vision and collective desire to rescue Nigeria. No sacrifice will be too great, and the ADC is that platform,” Tambuwal said.

Prominent party chieftain Buba Galadima also addressed delegates, accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to weaken opposition parties.

He said the ADC would require courage, boldness, and resilience to challenge the ruling party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“But what I want to remind them of is that even if there is no living human being in Nigeria and we bring a corpse in a coffin and put it against President Tinubu, I assure you that that corpse will win the election in 2027,” Galadima said.

In his closing remarks, ADC National Chairman David Mark described the convention as a major milestone and declared that it marked the beginning of the party’s march toward the Presidential Villa.

“We are going to continue this journey. We are not going to stop anymore. We started it in good shape,” Mark said.

He also praised members of the planning committee and commended delegates for what he described as a well-organised convention, formally bringing the gathering to a close.
