AFCON 2025: CAF withdraws Somali official for Nigeria VS Algeria match
Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan has been withdrawn from officiating the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final match between Nigeria and Algeria, Very Nigerian reports.
The Confederation of African Football, CAF, took the decision after discovering that Artan wore football boots from a brand not approved by the tournament’s official sponsors during a previous match.
His action was said to be a clear violation of CAF’s sponsorship and competition rules, which led to his removal from the high-profile quarter-final clash between the Super Eagles and Algeria.
Artan was named Referee of the Year at the 2025 CAF Awards in Rabat, Morocco.
CAF is now expected to name a replacement for the last-eight contest.
The encounter is slated for the Grand Stade de Marrakech on Saturday.
