All LGAs in Nigeria by States (Full List)

Published

on

Nigeria operates a three-tier system of government, and the local government level is the closest to the people.

Over the years, the role of Local Government Areas (LGAs) has become even more important because they are responsible for grassroots development, basic services, community mobilisation, and direct administration of wards and villages.

Today, the country has 774 recognised local government unit, 768 LGAs and 6 Area Councils (located in the Federal Capital Territory).

Each LGA is governed by a local government council headed by an elected chairman, supported by councillors who represent the wards within the council.

Most LGAs have between 10 and 20 wards, allowing communities to have direct representation and a structured channel for development programmes, public decisions, and government–citizen engagement.

This tier of government is vital for rural development, social welfare delivery, security support, markets, motor parks, and local infrastructure maintenance.

Below is the full breakdown of all the LGAs across Nigeria’s 36 states and the FCT.
