Bauchi senator Abdul Ningi dumps PDP after 26 years, eyes ADC

The senator representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District, Abdul Ahmed Ningi, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), bringing to an end over 20 years of membership in the opposition party.

Ningi confirmed his exit in a resignation letter addressed to the PDP Chairman of Ningi Ward in Ningi Local Government Area of Bauchi State, saying the decision followed wide consultations with his political associates, supporters, and other stakeholders.

He described the move as one of the most difficult decisions of his political career, noting that the PDP had provided him with a platform for national service since he joined the party in 1998.

Over the years, Ningi served two terms in the House of Representatives and later two terms in the Senate under the PDP platform, which he described as once a strong political force built on democratic ideals and internal cohesion.

However, the senator expressed concern over what he called persistent internal crises, leadership disputes, and factional struggles within the party, saying these developments had weakened its structure and unity.

“It is now a great concern and worrisome to me that this virile and united platform could be turned into a ramshackle organisation with internal leadership wrangling and factional interests,” he stated.

Meanwhile, political indications suggest a major realignment may be underway, as Ningi is expected to formally align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition ahead of the next election cycle.

Sources say his defection could further strengthen the ADC’s emerging coalition structure as political actors reposition ahead of 2027.

The senator expressed appreciation to PDP leaders and members at all levels for their support throughout his political journey and wished the party well in its ongoing efforts to rebuild and regain stability.
