Benue Assembly suspends Auditor-General over alleged missing N4.6bn
The Benue State House of Assembly has approved the suspension of the Auditor-General for Local Government, Abraham Gberidyer, over allegations of financial misappropriation and fraud amounting to ₦4.6 billion.
The decision was taken during plenary presided over by Speaker Berger Emberga.
According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Michael Zape, Governor Hyacinth Alia had earlier written to the House through the Office of the Head of Service, notifying lawmakers of alleged serious financial impropriety involving the Auditor-General.
The letter stated that Gberidyer is currently under investigation for corruption allegations and, in line with constitutional provisions, should not continue in office pending the outcome of the probe.
Following deliberations, lawmakers unanimously approved his suspension to allow for a full and unhindered investigation into the allegations.
Meanwhile, the House also passed several key legislative measures during the plenary session.
A bill for the creation and adoption of the Benue State Symbol and Anthem (2026) was passed after consideration of a report by the House Committee on Culture and Tourism. The Speaker subsequently directed the Clerk to prepare clean copies for the Governor’s assent.
In another development, a bill to repeal the Benue State Sports Marketing and Lotteries Board Law (2017) and re-enact the Benue State Lotteries, Public Online Lotteries, Gaming and Sports Marketing Board Law (2024) passed second reading and was referred to the Committee on Youth, Sports and Creativity for further scrutiny.
The House also passed a bill extending the retirement age and improving remuneration for magistrates and legal officers in the state judiciary, aimed at retaining experienced personnel in the justice system.
In addition, the Benue State Pension Harmonisation Bill scaled second reading. The bill, sponsored by Douglas Akya representing Makurdi South State Constituency, seeks to increase pension benefits for retirees in the state.
