The Body of Benchers has sanctioned 17 lawyers for professional misconduct, imposing penalties ranging from two to five years’ suspension from legal practice.

The sanctions were disclosed during the body’s annual lecture and presentation of the 2025 report of the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) held in Abuja.

The event was attended by prominent members of the legal profession, including the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun; the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN; and the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Afam Osigwe, SAN.

The gathering marked the second annual lecture of the Body of Benchers, which also featured the presentation of the yearly report of the LPDC — the body responsible for disciplining legal practitioners found guilty of professional misconduct.

The conference provided an opportunity for senior members of the bar and bench to review developments within the profession and explore ways of strengthening ethics, discipline, and professionalism among lawyers in the country.

Discussions at the event also highlighted the importance of mentorship for young lawyers as part of broader efforts to uphold professional standards in the legal sector.

Speaking during the programme, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Oluokoje, expressed concern over the growing involvement of legal practitioners in financial crimes.

According to him, more than 100 senior lawyers are currently being prosecuted by the anti-graft agency over alleged financial fraud.

The presentation of the LPDC’s 2025 report formed a major highlight of the conference, revealing that 17 lawyers were penalised for various offences relating to professional misconduct.

The Body of Benchers, which regulates the legal profession in Nigeria and oversees the call to the Nigerian Bar, reiterated the need for strict adherence to ethical standards within the profession.

Participants at the lecture emphasised that sustained discipline, strong mentorship, and unwavering commitment to professional ethics are crucial to maintaining public confidence in the legal system.
