BREAKING: Adelabu resigns as Power Minister to join Oyo 2027 governorship race
The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has resigned from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s cabinet to pursue his long-standing ambition to become governor of Oyo State.
In a resignation letter dated April 22, 2026, and addressed to the President through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Adelabu said his exit would take effect from April 30, 2026, to allow for a smooth transition.
He described his decision as one taken with “deep sense of honour and profound gratitude,” thanking Tinubu for the opportunity to serve as Minister of Power and contribute to reforms in the energy sector.
Adelabu noted that his resignation was necessary to comply with provisions of the amended electoral law, which restricts political office holders from contesting elections while still in office. He added that his governorship ambition in Oyo State dates back to 2016 and has remained a consistent political goal.
According to him, stepping down now will allow him to fully focus on his political aspiration ahead of the next electoral cycle.
His exit marks a significant political development within the administration, especially as attention begins to shift toward early positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
