BREAKING: Explosion rocks Mosque in Maiduguri, many worshippers feared injured
Suspected Boko Haram insurgents detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) at a Juma’at Mosque in Gamboru Ward, near the Customs area in the heart of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
The explosion occurred at approximately 6:10 p.m. on Wednesday, less than 12 hours before Christmas, while Muslim worshippers were observing the Maghrib prayer.
Although details remain sketchy, residents told Channels Television that several worshippers were either killed or injured in the attack.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Borno, ASP Nahum Daso, could not immediately confirm the incident, stating that he was on his way to the scene to conduct a proper assessment.
The suspected blast has heightened fear among residents, particularly within the Christian community as preparations for the 2025 Christmas celebrations continue.
Security operatives have cordoned off the area to prevent further casualties and to carry out preliminary investigations into the incident.
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and report any suspicious movements in the vicinity as security agencies continue to monitor the situation closely.
