BREAKING: Fubara dissolves Rivers Executive Council, sack commissioners

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has dissolved the State Executive Council, directing all Commissioners and Special Advisers to hand over to Permanent Secretaries or the most senior officers in their respective ministries.

The directive was reportedly issued on Thursday, days after a high-level meeting involving President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The Sunday meeting came against the backdrop of heightened political tension in Rivers State, including a fresh impeachment move against Governor Fubara by members of the State House of Assembly.

Presidency sources had earlier indicated that President Tinubu’s intervention was aimed at de-escalating the prolonged crisis between the executive and legislative arms of government in the oil-rich state.

The political standoff, which has lingered for weeks, saw renewed hostilities between the governor and lawmakers, deepening uncertainty within the state’s governance structure.

The impeachment push against Fubara further intensified the crisis, prompting widespread calls from political stakeholders and civil society actors for urgent federal intervention.

Following Sunday’s meeting, which was widely interpreted as a decisive peace move by the President, signs of reconciliation began to emerge.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday after inspecting projects in the Federal Capital Territory, Wike expressed optimism that the political impasse was nearing resolution.

He described President Tinubu as a unifying figure whose intervention had laid the groundwork for restoring peace and stability in Rivers State.

Governor Fubara’s decision to dissolve the Executive Council is being viewed by observers as part of broader efforts to consolidate the truce and reset governance structures amid ongoing political realignments in the state.
