BREAKING: INEC bows to pressure suspends voter revalidation plan
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has directed all Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) to suspend publicity and arrangements for the planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise.
The directive was contained in a letter dated April 4, 2026, signed by the commission’s Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony.
Despite the suspension, INEC instructed RECs to continue internal preparations for the exercise, including sourcing personnel and preparing Voter Enrolment Devices.
“RECs are also directed to step down all publicity and arrangements for the voter revalidation exercise and await further directives from the commission,” the notice stated.
The commission had earlier announced plans to commence the voter revalidation exercise on April 13, 2026, as part of efforts to update the voter register ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a related development, INEC disclosed that its scheduled meeting with RECs, initially planned to hold physically on April 9, will now take place virtually.
According to the notice, commissioners are to remain in their respective states and await login details for the Zoom meeting once arrangements are finalised.
“Consequently, RECs are advised to remain in their states and await the login details, which will be shared once the meeting is set up,” the commission said.
INEC apologised for any inconvenience caused by the changes and assured stakeholders of its continued commitment to effective electoral planning.
The move signals possible adjustments in the commission’s timeline as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.
