BREAKING: Italy halts Schengen travel deal with Spain after Ceuta migrant surge
Italy has temporarily suspended its participation in the Schengen free-travel arrangement with Spain following a sharp increase in migrant crossings into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced the move after authorities reported that about 60,000 people entered Ceuta, Spain’s autonomous city on the North African coast.
According to Tajani, the temporary suspension is intended to strengthen border security and protect Italian citizens amid growing concerns over irregular migration.
He said the decision was taken to “safeguard the security of our citizens and defend the European borders,” stressing that the measure is temporary while authorities assess the situation.
The move was announced on Friday, just as Spain said over 48,000 migrants had returned to Morocco.
