BREAKING: NDC adopts Obi as lone presidential aspirant

Published

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially closed the sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for its 2027 presidential election, with indications that former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is the only aspirant who purchased the forms.

Party sources disclosed that Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, was the sole contender for the party’s presidential ticket at the close of the exercise.

The party, however, extended by one week the deadline for the collection of Expression of Interest Forms for aspirants seeking governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly tickets.

In a statement issued by the party’s National Secretary, Mr. Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the deadline earlier fixed for 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, 2026, was extended to midnight on Sunday, May 24, 2026.

The statement clarified that the extension applies only to non-presidential positions, stressing that the sale of presidential forms had officially ended.

According to the timetable released by the party, screening of aspirants who purchased and completed the forms will commence on Tuesday, May 19, and conclude on Tuesday, May 26, 2026.

The NDC also disclosed that the collection and return of nomination forms for screened and cleared aspirants would begin on May 20 and end on May 26.

The party warned that no further extension would be granted and urged aspirants to comply strictly with the approved guidelines and deadlines.

Aspirants were directed to appear for screening and pre-qualification interviews with relevant documents, including educational certificates, birth certificates or declarations of age, passport photographs, voter cards, NDC membership cards and curriculum vitae.

The statement added that all documents submitted to the screening committee must be provided in six copies.

According to the party, the screening exercise would be based on factors such as the wishes of the electorate, competence, local political considerations and the character of aspirants.

The NDC also directed its Screening Committee to observe the party’s affirmative action policy for women, youths and persons living with disabilities.

The party encouraged aspirants to embrace consensus-building, noting that only cleared aspirants would be eligible to purchase nomination forms.

With Obi emerging as the lone presidential aspirant, political observers believe he is likely to emerge as the party’s consensus presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general election.
