BREAKING: Nigerian Air Force Jet crashes near residential area in Niger State
A Nigerian Air Force Alpha Jet reportedly crashed near Karabonde in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State on Saturday evening, with early indications showing that both pilots survived after successfully ejecting from the aircraft.
The incident was first reported by Lapai TV, which released a brief video confirming that the jet went down close to the community.
Residents said they heard a loud noise moments before the aircraft hit the ground.
Eyewitnesses suggested the jet may have departed from the Kainji Air Force Base before experiencing a mid-air malfunction.
One source who spoke to journalists said the pilots ejected moments before the crash, adding that Air Force personnel were already moving toward the site.
“I think the aircraft took off from the Kainji air force base. We learnt that the air force is mobilising to the crash site,” the witness said.
A community member, Lukman Sulaiman, also confirmed the crash in a phone conversation, noting that the aircraft came down at about 4:10 p.m.
“It landed very close to the town, but thank God the pilots ejected safely,” he said, explaining that villagers initially fled out of fear after hearing the loud impact.
“We later returned to the scene when we discovered the pilots survived.”
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian military had yet to make an official statement on the cause of the crash or the condition of the aircraft.
