BREAKING: PDP crisis deepens as INEC rejects Turaki-led NWC, cites court judgments
The Independent National Electoral Commission has said it will not recognise the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party led by Kabiru Turaki, pointing to subsisting court judgments and unresolved legal processes surrounding the party’s leadership.
In a letter dated December 22, 2025, and signed by its Secretary, Dr Rose Oriaran-Anthony, the commission said it could not accede to requests to acknowledge or upload on its website the list of national officers reportedly elected at the PDP’s National Convention held on November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan.
INEC explained that its position was guided by existing court decisions and ongoing legal proceedings affecting the party, stressing that it would not take any action that could prejudice matters still before the courts.
The commission advised the party to resolve all outstanding legal issues before seeking any formal recognition, noting that it would only act when there is clarity and finality on the matter.
The commission explained that its position was guided by subsisting court decisions and pending litigation relating to the leadership crisis within the PDP.
INEC stated that it would be improper to recognise any factional officers while the matter remains before the courts.
