BREAKING: Police detain Doctor, Pastor over alleged plot to assassinate FCT Minister Wike
A Port Harcourt–based medical doctor and pastor has been arrested over allegations of planning to assassinate Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, in a development that adds a new dimension to ongoing political tensions in Rivers State.
Security sources told Journalist that operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) detained Dr. Tombari Joseph Gbeneol, a medical doctor and founder of Life Forte Chapel Church, following intelligence reports of a potential threat to Wike’s life.
According to sources, the arrest came after authorities intercepted a phone conversation between Gbeneol and Dr. Tammy Danagogo, the immediate past Secretary to the Rivers State Government (SSG).
In the alleged conversation, the suspects reportedly discussed a plan to engage Israeli nationals to carry out the assassination. The plot allegedly included a proposal to seek funding from Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara to execute the operation.
“The content of the call was considered a grave national security threat,” a senior security official said. “That triggered immediate action by the IRT.”
Operatives, led by CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, moved swiftly to arrest Gbeneol, who has been in custody for approximately two weeks. Efforts to apprehend Danagogo are ongoing, with sources indicating he has gone underground since the matter emerged.
The Nigeria Police Force confirmed the arrest, with Force Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin stating: “He is in our custody. Investigation is ongoing,” without providing further details.
Security officials disclosed that detectives are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case, including the potential involvement of additional accomplices.
The arrest underscores rising concerns over politically motivated plots in Rivers State, intensifying the already tense rivalry between Minister Wike and Governor Fubara.
