BREAKING: Reps endorse state police report, approve 18 key clauses
The House of Representatives has adopted the report on the proposed establishment of state police and approved 18 constitutional amendment clauses.
The decision was taken during plenary on Thursday, presided over by Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas.
The approved clauses form part of ongoing efforts by lawmakers to amend the 1999 Constitution with a view to strengthening governance, enhancing security, and improving the effectiveness of key institutions across the country.
The adoption of the state police report marks a significant step in the push for decentralised policing, a proposal that has generated extensive debate among stakeholders amid growing concerns over insecurity in different parts of Nigeria.
The constitutional amendment process is expected to continue as lawmakers consider additional recommendations aimed at reforming various aspects of the nation’s governance structure.
Further details on the specific clauses approved by the House are expected to emerge as deliberations continue.
