BREAKING: Tinubu names Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf as NAHCON Chairman
The appointment follows the resignation of Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman, who stepped down after about 14 months in office.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf as the new Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), subject to confirmation by the Senate.
The appointment was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, President Tinubu has formally written to the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, requesting the expeditious confirmation of Ambassador Yusuf in line with Section 3(2) of the NAHCON Act, 2026.
Ambassador Yusuf is expected to replace Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman, who resigned earlier this week after spending about 14 months at the helm of the Hajj regulatory body.
The Presidency described the new appointee as a seasoned Nigerian career diplomat. He previously served as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Türkiye between 2021 and 2024.
The development comes barely 48 hours after Professor Usman stepped down from office, paving the way for the appointment of a new leadership at the commission responsible for regulating and supervising Hajj operations for Nigerian pilgrims.
The Senate is expected to act on the President’s request in the coming days.
